BLACKKKLANSMAN
Cert 15
135 mins
BBFC advice: Contains racist violence and language, very strong language
Wow. Spike Lee's Blackkklansman is a stirring and original insight into racial hatred but has surprisingly funny moments.
In my opinion, it is one of the films of 2018.
But it did inspire a flick through Google to see if Lee's story of black detective Ron Stallworth had any relation to the truth.
It turns out that the answer is yes...and no. Stallworth was a real police officer who did infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan but there are tangents which have been created for dramatic effect.
I am usually a stickler for keeping to the facts but Lee's movie is so well crafted and makes such important points that it is forgivable.
It stars John David Washington as Stallworth, the only black officer in the Colorado Springs police department.
Stallworth is a character of contrasts. He is steadfast in his ambition to be a cop but he also despises the racism which is endemic in the police and in wider society.
Therefore, after being assigned to the intelligence department, he alights upon the crazy concept of infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan - the most infamous racist organisation in America.
He does this through a series of phone interviews but needs a stand-in when it comes to face-to-face meetings so persuades a colleague (Adam Driver) to put his ass on the line.
Thus, Driver's character who is non-practising Jewish, has to embark upon racist one-upmanship with the local KKK chapter leader (Ryan Eggold) and his unhinged henchmen (Jasper Pääkkönen and Paul Walter Hauser).
To compliacte the scenario further, Stallworth is also infiltrating a black activist group and falling for its charismatic leader (Laura Harrier).
Tension surrounds both attempting to remain undiscovered and there is a deeply serious side surrounding white surpremacists and black persecution in America.
The additional brilliance of Lee's film is that he elicits laugh-out-loud humour from the most tense situations.
Blackkklansman works so well because of great direction and writing and inspired cast selection. Washington and Driver are superb in the lead roles but there is also great support from the aforementioned along with Topher Grace as KKK grand wizard David Duke.
And there are superbly sculpted nods towards history, including a contribution from singer and civil rights leader Harry Belafonte, who is now 91, and a stirring pre-credit reminder of why the film was made.
It is both entertaining, illuminating and finger-pointing and will doubtlessly appear in my top ten movies of the year.
Reasons to watch: One of the films of the year
Reasons to avoid: Embellishes the true story
Laughs: Five
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 9.5/10
Director quote - Spike Lee: ""I hope that (viewers would) be motivated to register to vote. The midterms are coming up, then this guy in the White House is going to run again, and what we're going through is demonstrated, I think, is full evidence (of) what happens when you don't vote, when you don't take part in the process."
The big question - How do the violent bigots reconcile the church with their actions?
