BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, gory images

Wouldn't we all like to be as crazy as Nicolas Cage appears to be? Well, just for a day.
I was asked my opinion about Panos Cosmatos's film Mandy a few months back and was going to give it a miss.
But an end-of-year opportunity arose so I checked out what has been hailed by some critics as a cult classic in more ways than one.
I have to say I couldn't agree - I found it bewildering to the point of insanity.
Cage plays Red, a logger who lives in remote America, loved up with his girlfriend, Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), a cashier at a gas station.
There's a hint that both have had difficult pasts but they seem happy in their seclusion.
However, their lives take a devastating turn when she comes into contact with a religious cult led by a crazed leader (Linus Roache).
The latter becomes obsessed with Mandy and insists his followers kidnap her.
Thereafter, the movie splits into two, concentrating firstly on the cult leader's power and association with a demonic killer biker gang.
The second half sees Red go in search revenge with whichever power tool he can lay his hands on.
This makes the film sound rather straightforward, doesn't it?
Well, it's not. It is utterly crazed. Its violence is very strong with chainsaws to the fore and it drifts into all sort of weird psychedelia.
Even worse, I either dropped off when vital elements of its backstory were explained or they never were.
Therefore, I could not understand the connection between the cult and the demon bikers or even whether the bikers were human (they didn't look like it).
In addition, a more detailed explanation of Red and Mandy's past might have gleaned greater empathy.
In short it is just another movie which gives Nicolas Cage the chance to be .... Nicolas Cage.
Yep, that deranged smile is back again.

Reasons to watch: There certainly has been no other movie like it in 2018
Reasons to avoid: Utterly utterly bonkers

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: Yes
Overall rating: 4/10

Director quote - Panos Cosmatos: "I wanted to make a movie that everybody could connect with on some personal level. From that, I drew a little bit on my own relationship with my wife, where there are these moments where you’re happy, and you’re alone together. Being in each other’s presence."

The big question - What was that all about?
