BBFC advice: Contains mild bad language, sex references

What do I know? I was just about to bemoan what I perceived as screechy, unfunny comedy and then discover it is the second highest-grossing Punjabi film of all time.
I guess the truth must be that if my funny bone isn't tickled by movies of this type after nine years of watching them, it never will be.
To me, Jagdeep Sidhu's Shadaa goes over the old ground of boy chases girl, hindered partially by family backgrounds.
But I now understand that the actual meaning of a title refers to a man over 30 who is not married even though he wants to be.
During Shadaa, I couldn't really make out if Dosanjh's character, Chadta, wants to wed or not.
He is a photographer who initially falls for a wedding planner (Neeru Bajwa) but she rejects him because she, ironically, doesn't believe in marriage.
Inevitably, the besotted Chadta won't take no for an answer and becomes her stalker (well, it would seem like that to anyone in the UK - in India, such behaviour is deemed to be romantic).
Meanwhile, unaware of his dalliance, his mother and father are at their wits' end in hoping he will finally be spliced.
True, there are a couple of unusual moments in Shadaa which I can imagine would have Punjabi audiences rolling (I watched it on Amazon Prime) but overall I found it to be over two hours of Dosanjh being irritating.
There is just too much shouting and Dosanjh's inane laugh was driving me crazy.
Meanwhile, Bajwa, one of my favourite Punjabi actresses is, by and large, left to be a silent foil.
Anyway, I have seen it and have my opinion. Clearly, it differs greatly from those at whom it is aimed.

Reasons to watch: If you like the loudness of a Punjabi romance
Reasons to avoid: Just wasn't funny to me

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 4/10

Did you know? Mystery surrounds Dilji Dosanjh's real-life marriage. It is reported that he is married to Sandeep Kaur who lives in America with his son.

The final word. Diljit Dosanjh: “I was thinking about the topics that have not been touched upon in Punjab. So I realised that a film on Shadaa had not been made. It has been touched upon but an entire film hasn’t been attempted before. I discussed the idea with my writer and director, Jagdeep Sidhu, who developed the story.” Daily Pioneer
