Just three weeks ago, I read that René Auberjonois had died.
At first, the name didn't mean anything to me and then I realised that he had played Odo on Deep Space 9.
I had watched the documentary in which was among many others who had contributed memories of the Star Trek spin-off series which Mrs W and I had enjoyed back in the 1990s.
We had been devotees of Star Trek - The Next Generation - to this day, the only sci-fi series which has really captured my imagination.
Deep Space 9 was a much-maligned follow-up which seemed to be the antithesis of the Star Trek vision to explore strange new worlds.
Instead, the action, if it could be called that, was set on a space station.
What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine brings back the cast and creators to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ‘black sheep’ of the Star Trek family.
They explain how it is now being discovered via streaming services and TV repeats by new younger fans and re-discovered by those who championed it from the start.
Ira Steven Behr and David Zappone delve into the series by reuniting the cast and presents footage from the show.
They also reassemble the original writing staff to create what would be an imaginary future episode of Deep Space Nine.
I found the film much more engaging than I had expected.
It reminded me how The Ferengi were introduced to us and how we had empathised with characters such as Sisko (Avery Brooks) and O'Brien (Colm Meaney).
More importantly, the legions of sci-fi fans will lap it up because it gives a great insight into one of the shows which make up the legend that is Star Trek.
