The parents of an 11-year-old girl look her sternly in her eye and tell her that she is not their daughter but that they adopted her after a famous rapper walked out on her.
At the end of the elaborate story, they ask if she wants them to contact her biological father.
After a brief silence, she tells them she doesn't believe a word.
And she is right to call them out - because this a sick prank by two people who don't appear to have grown up.
Rita Merle plays young Tommy in her dad Bruno's offbeat comedy-drama which is set over the 24 hours before the first day of a school term.
To most folk, this wouldn't be special but Tommy has a far from conventional life and is desperate just to be like any other girl.
Her mum (Camille Rutherford) and dad (Pio Marmaï) are besotted with her and each other but resist putting down roots.
This means that they never know where their next night will be spent or where their next meal is coming from.
And as they go from pillar to post, they spin yarns to try to keep each other on their toes.
They also have run-ins with the law, arguments with each other and moments of great family joy.
Felicità is a light curiosity - with an empathetically underplayed central role by a young girl with clear talent.
But, while it has some original thoughts, I would doubt it would live long in the memory.
