"We protested like that at our school," proclaimed Mrs W as the girls at Rockport High filed out of class in anger.

Sadly, so much time has passed since Mrs W's student days that she couldn't remember the cause of the demonstration by her and her pals.

But I have to admit my estimation of them went up because I went to a very traditional play-by-the-rules-or-you-are-out establishment.

The point of Amy Poehler's excellent Moxie! is to kick against such a system and the inevitable bullies who come with it.

Its focus is Vivienne (Hadley Robinson), an introverted 16-year-old who is keeping her head down as she goes through the final years at school.

However, her head is turned by a new girl (Alycia Pascual-Pena) who has a radically different take on what should be happening at Rockport High.

So, she stands up to the verbal and physical abuse of the arrogant football captain (Patrick Schwarzenegger).

This inspires Vivienne to create secretly an anti-establishment magazine called Moxie! which is deliberately aimed at those who are appalled by bullying and the blind eye turned by the teaching staff.

In some ways, Moxie is quite shocking... the levels of harrassment and subsequent inaction by the school's headteacher (Marcia Gay Harden) are startling.

However, it is also hugely uplifting - Vivienne battles positively with teen angst despite threats to her friendship with her best pal (Lauren Tsai) and the emergence of a  first fella (Nico Hiraga).

Much more than that - she finds a voice which screams loud and clear on behalf of those who do not feel that they can raise theirs.
